The devil plays tennis with the last man in Chicago while a brontosaurus looms in the distance.

An elderly blind woman thinks she's feeding the birds.

A music industry insider falls short of immortality and makes a shocking confession.

A girl with sharp teeth and an excellent sense of smell shops at a convenience store, avoiding chocolate.

And fourteen more.

"Detzner's writing asks all the right questions, and answers just enough of them to leave your mind toying with the ideas for days ... If you're looking for cheap scares, look elsewhere. This is a writer that deals in an uneasy fear, in the unknown but somehow personal."
Derek Gettys, The Arson Club

"....stories of unholy compromise, quiet madness and apocalypses both great and small... If you’re not familiar with his work, these eighteen stories are a great overview of what he’s been doing in the always flexible horror genre."
Michael Penkas, Black Gate

Many of these stories were previously published in horror magazines, including professional markets like Pseudopod.

If you like strange stories delivered in powerful little bursts, give this one a read. Also, keep an eye out for Detzner's next collection, BEASTS.

Scarce Resources Weird Stories Book 1 edition by Brendan Detzner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is a nice collection of weirdness indeed; some are very short and I had to consciously let the previous story go before heading to the next one. For that reason, I recommend reading them one at a time, just before bed. These make nice dream-food!
While all the stories in the collection have a common voice, they run the genre range from dark humor ("Super Jesus") to quiet horror ("Iowa Highway") to high-concept science fiction ("Dinosaurs") to zombie crime("A Black Hole in Chicago"). My personal favorite was "Lake Sympathy," a different take on the otherworldly summoning trope. All things considered, you'll find something to like in this collection.
This was Detzner's first collection of shorts (before the awesome and widely reviewed "Beasts,") and it lives up to the title. The stories are weird, spare, haunting and cutting. My favorite is probably "The Black Plague," which is all of those things plus romantic in its twisted way.
Author Brendan Detzner continues to thrill and delight readers with his newest collection of short fiction stories, Scarce Resources.

An overall entertaining read, this compilation of 18 queer short stories, features an assortment of distinctive characters, engrossing settings and imaginative story lines. Although all the stories have some entertainment merit to them there are a few that I found particularly absorbing; The House Rock and Roll Built, A Black Hole in Chicago, Quiet, and Veronica. As with his other books this was definitely a worthwhile book for horror fans.
There have been a few short story collections that have come my way and I really enjoy them because they provide a nice break to a longer novel. In this collection, we have a bunch of very interesting, very quick, readable, and VERY strange stories.

And, because this is a collection of stories, many of which have appeared in other publications over the years, one gets to observe how a writer's style has changed over time... in a good way. (Although I'm not sure if these are all placed in chronological order of publication. There are a few clues that indicate otherwise, but nothing to detract from the overall quality.)

Some stories feel a little short, while "Music for Scalpel and Piano" is micro-fiction on the head of a pin. I think even "Another Saturday Night" could be drawn out a little more.

I really, really, really like the explanations of the stories at the end, which help explain things, and make me realize the micro piece is really OK. Although I'd want longer. That's just a matter of taste...

... as are these stories. When Detzner says that "Super Jesus" has no redeeming value, he's right. But, guilty as I am, it was probably my favorite, next to "Another Saturday Night." As a connoisseur of strange and weird things, this was a very nice foray into that territory. Though not totally bizarro, it is worth a read.

So, while this is not a tome of powerful literature, it is good and a quick, fun read. As mentioned before, some of the stories feel like shells (darn good shells, mind you), but slightly empty or lacking.

If you are into short stories, I definitely recommend this.

Please add a description for . When I wrote this, the title was misspelled, "Scarce Resoures" and it is being fixed I am told.

I was given a copy of this for review.

This is not my typical style book but it was interesting if you like horror stories. The author keeps you reading even if you're not sure what you're reading. Worth the read. This is the first book I've read by this author

I rate this book 3 1/2 stars

Scarce Resources's collection of weird stories offers elegant, intelligent tales that range from knot twisted strange to shriek in your seat horrific, with some of the cleanest, sparest writing I've seen in a long time (and I'm old, so think decades.) I thoroughly enjoyed journeying through the bizarre within the mundane, and meeting a cast of characters who kept me absorbed. Highly recommend to anyone with an IQ over two digits who doesn't need to be spoon-fed a plot.
