A few of the authors I follow occasionally do "book bombs," where they will tout a release by a fellow author, to help get their name out there and introduce them to new readers. That's how I came across this book by Melissa Kendrick, with Rob Kroese (author of 'The Big Sheep,' 'Starship Grifters,' and the Mercury series) recommending 'Shattered Illusions.' I'm always interested in finding new authors when the book only costs $1, the price is right for me to check it out.

As this is a suspense novel, I won't go into the plot. The book summary does that well enough. I'll just say that, although one of its categories is "Romance," I wouldn't consider this a stereotypical romance novel. It reads like a straight up suspense thriller such as one might read from Michael Connelly or John Lescroart. There is some romance, but no more than what you're likely to get from either of the authors I mentioned. In short, don't let that scare you away.

There is genuine humor, the main players are introduced in believable ways, and their motivations are believable within the realm of the story. As another reviewer stated, the characters really do avoid the stereotypical thriller tropes, which I found refreshing. I really enjoyed it, and would read more from Kendrick in the future.

Another thing to note: it's a short novel. I read it in one 4-hour sitting. Fortunately, it doesn't come across as rushed, just lean without any necessary filler.

I'm knocking a star off for a very personal reason: I don't like reading sex scenes. Just not my thing. Otherwise, I'd rate it 5 stars. Your mileage may vary. Fortunately **SPOILER ALERT** when the scene does happen, it's at the end of a chapter (35) and I was able to skip to the next chapter without missing anything. **END SPOILERS**

So, if you enjoy Connelly, Lescroart, or Kellerman, I would definitely recommend 'Shattered Illusions' by Melissa Kendrick.

Shattered Illusions edition by Melissa Kendrick Romance eBooks Reviews

Normally I'm not one to read romance novels.
I'll say, though, that this book was a pleasant departure from what I normally read and that I was pleasantly surprised.
I'm going to dance around giving away any spoilers, since there are some nice twists in this book, ones that buck the trope trends that a lot of thrillers tend to fall into.
The main heroine of the book avoids making any "who would do THAT" mistakes, as do most of the protagonists in the book in general. There is some great detail in the beginning of a woman "taking control of a bad situation" and her first stop away from home is very well written. A few awkward moments of dialogue, especially with her daughter, where sometimes she seems like she's 7, other times not, but overall, again, there aren't too many of the usual child tropes in the book that normally make me roll my eyes.
If there was one part of the book I found.. made me kind of hmmm and hawww it was the ineptitude and rather poor light most all of the law enforcement officials are painted with in the story. For someone who's made detective, one of the main antagonists acts in a way that seems beyond unhinged from the get go -- delusional and maniacal and apparently everyone at the station is just a-ok with that because "brothers in blue". This, contrasted with the stereotypical lazy idiot "country sheriff" who's portrayed as a sleepy, judgemental jerk at nearly every opportunity. Even when confronted with what would be a possible out from a bad situation, the main characters treat him as a "less than useless" individual, and it just rubbed me a bit the wrong way.
The romance aspects happen a bit on the road to rapid but for the pacing of the book (and the fact it's a stand alone novel) it's paced alright. It was heartfelt and made me smile and gave a genuine warmth to the novel.
This is a recommended read, and I will say that once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down and finished it within two sittings. If you're looking for a thriller that's paced well, with descriptions that are flavorful and never overdone and characters that make you feel for them it's certainly worth picking up.
I'll definitely keep my eye out for other titles from Melissa Kendrick.
It seemed like deja vu. But it's a fair way to kill a couple hits. For free it's a doer.
She's a great writer - wish she had more books!!
I'm not a romance reader, but Melissa Kendrick is an excellent writer. She got me interested in the characters and it was an all around solid story. I'd read it again.
I dove into this with some trepidation, as it was explained to me as being a thriller romance. Luckily for me, the book is heavy on thrills and light on romance. Miss Kendrick did a phenomenal job of pacing here; the chapters were short enough to read in bits and pieces but the tension escalated so quickly that I had a hard time putting it down.
The story itself is about a young woman just trying to do the right thing for her daughter and escape an abusive relationship. Unfortunately she seems to jump from a bad situation to a much worse one when she meets Alex Teppo, a man who's willing to give her work at his bar but only if she's willing to ignore the fact that he's into some seriously unsavory and illegal business. Things ramp up from there quickly and don't much let up. There are a few predictable moments but they don't detract from the overall story. The tension is there, the emotions are raw and real and entirely believable, and I am officially a fan.
