The Mystery of 31 New Inn, a classic mystery novel by R. Austin Freeman, relates a puzzling tale from an earlier century. In the grand tradition of the great sleuths brought to life by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle comes John Thorndyke, cerebral, meticulous, British, ... and undestimated. A contested will and an unusual sickness have no apparent connection until John Thorndyke and Dr. Jervis collaborate on a labyrinth of clues, including broken glass, an upside down picture, a veiled woman, and a box of candles. This puzzle is solved with inductive reasoning and careful use of the scientific method.

This is the point, in their second adventure, where Jervis and Thorndyke make their association permanent. Although, I'm like one reviewer in that it seems Jarvis is particularly obtuse. There are two separate cases involved; one where Jervis tries to save a patient obviously being slowly killed with morphine, and another where a will is being contested. Thorndyke is able to pick up the most minute clues while Jervis doesn't have a clue what's going on. The average reader will be able see where the clues are leading, but it's a great read following Thorndyke as he pieces out the villains in both cases. I am a tremendous fan of Freeman and all the Thorndyke mysteries. I highly recommend this book.

This was a very enjoyable story! I could see what was coming, but couldn't wait for Thorndyke's explanation for how all the puzzle pieces fit together!
A few months ago I bought The Vanishing Man. It was the first one I'd read in this series. It was written in the early 1900s and started out very slow. It got better and ended strongly. This book had me hooked from the first chapter and was a good story throughout. It begins to drag things out near the end, but I was pleased overall. It is follows a Watson and Holmes theme but doesn't always keep things moving as well as I'm accustomed to.
Not an inverted mystery, which Freeman is known for, but a good little whodunit nonetheless. Does a nice job of portraying the time period.
Similar to a longer Sherlock Holmes mystery features Dr. Thorndyke (doctor/lawyer) and his friend Dr. Jervis. However, the pace is slower. Another reviewer found it tedious at times and I would agree. For example, about 3/4 of the way through the book Thorndyke repeatedly asks Jervis to put two and two together - Jervis repeatedly admits that he has no idea - despite the fact that many of the conclusions Thorndyke eventually presents will be obvious to any modern reader. For me, the story dragged too much and I was glad to get to the end of it.
This is a republished book written a century ago. Do not let that deter you. Except for the absence of phones (cell or otherwise) and the propensity of the characters to travel by horse-drawn cab, you would never know it. It is pleasantly reminiscent of the original Sherlock Holmes tales, but better crafted, more detailed, and much more realistic.

The lead character, a London doctor, is an active participant as well as narrator and he works closely with his mentor, who is both a barrister and a physician, who has a gift for seeing the unlikely possibilities that others miss. Working with few tools (because when the book was written they had not yet been invented), he isolates, recovers, identifies and analyses minutiae found at crime scenes. The reader is treated fairly, given all the clues, and is able to "play along" without the level of frustration that some authors cause by not revealing all that needs to be known.

The digital workmanship is excellent with only a very infrequent spelling or typographical error (unlike some of the current works that seem to have gone direct from author's draft to digital without being seen by an editor, publisher, or proofreader).

If you like mysteries that turn on the recovery and interpretation of seemingly trivial details and can tolerate the foggy nights and cobblestone streets streets of London in the early 1900's, I think you will thoroughly enjoy this tale. When you are done, just remember to remind yourself when it was written.
...before you plunk down your hard earned buck I'd check out the collections like Dr. Thorndyke Mysteries Collection (ASIN B00F757YNO), The First R. Austin Freeman MEGAPACK (ASIN B00IJKQH96) or DR. THORNDYKE 7 NOVELS & 12 SHORT STORIES. Premium Collection Vol.1 (ASIN B00N023XHM) where you are more apt to get your money's worth. A good British mystery overall, but as to purchasing this particular edition I'd refer to this passage in the book, "But the wise man always holds a doubt in reserve,"
Having gathered together a list of mystery, detective, and crime writers from Agatha Christies Secret Notebooks I turned to both Munsys and Gutenberg to find any of these influences and contemporaries of Ms. Christie. My delight upon finding myself thoroughly engrossed in this novel after the terrible dullness of a previous writer was great. I found that though the story is told in such a way that I knew the reasons and the murderer very quickly that none of my enjoyment in this very readable novel was hindered.

I intend to read as many of this author's work as I can as not since Collected Works of Anna Katharine Green (25 Books) have I found such a readable writer from their shared era. This is the third book starring the very learned Dr. Thorndyke. His friend, and as of this book his junior, fulfills the role of sidekick in a typical manner. Dr. Jerris learns and shares, and even if you find it difficult (as I did) that he would not put two and two properly together, I at least found his learning certain things via his friend as instructive of good scientific reasoning as propounded by Dr. Thorndyke.

I'm writing this review on an iPod Touch which has the application. That makes it difficult to keep track of my review. But it does mean I can rate this eBook properly - the mistakes and typos were few and the formatting unobtrusive and the eBook as a whole looked decent. For free I don't expect linked TOC - though it would be nice.

On completion I can say that I highly recommend it.
