Things are not always as they seem

The Mark of the Beast by Rudyard Kipling is a short horror story set in mystic India where things are not always as they seem. One New Year’s Eve, a group of British friends get drunk at a club. One of them, Fleete is so drunk that he desecrates the temple of the Monkey God. A leper priest bites him as punishment and Fleete begins to act strangely.

I loved this feral and brutal story. It has the intensities of exorcisms.
A drunken man desecrate a god and he is punished in a terrible way. Kipling's world is one where the British characters let themselves to be dragged into the Indian magical reality; so the characters deal with the curse embracing the fact that they are in another land with another gods.
The only thing I didn't like about the Xist Classics edition is after the end a guide for readers clubs. It is quite long and next time I will think twice if I get a Xist edition.

Interesting story. Kipling writes as one who experienced this event. I guess the whole phenomenon will need to be further examined.
Kipling's use of the language is masterful. This story, for me anyway, is the decisive werewolf story. Scary and engaging.
This short story is a good example of Kipling's early work. Although the tale has it's merits the characters are not as well developed as those in his later works. However, it does whet one's appetite.
My favorite short story, ever.
Well THIS is a bit removed from Gunga Din! How I missed this previously, I'll never know, but I very much enjoyed this "other side" of Kipling. Great setting, well written, intense. I'm digging into more works by this author. Better late...
...Presently from the room came the long-drawn howl of a wolf." Plot starts getting really tense about 1/4 of the way once Fleete is touched by the leper priest and becomes a fine horror story thru and thru from that point forward as epitomized by the horses going mad when he enters the stable. Unusually good horror offering by the same man who gave us " the Jungle Book" and one I would recommend. One more passage to get you 'licking your chops' - "The human spirit must have been giving way all day and have died out with the twilight. We were dealing with a beast that had once been Fleete."
I always enjoy Kipling and this one is no exception. Great short story taking place in India about the curse of a nude leper on a man named Fleete, in the temple of Hanuman or the Monkey-God. Kipling created drama while also making me smile. The irony of the English gentlemen defying nature and the symbolic imagery offered by the faceless leper who mews like a cat, adds to the mysterious tale. I liked it and suggest it to anyone interested in something short and eerie.
